Blog 5: Dane Brennon and James Cliburn - Concept 2

Font: Elephant (Italic)
Front - Sketch by Dane
Back - Sketch by Dan
Still going from the 1960s Mod Style Dane and James are fond of, this dress also uses the short-skirt style, but is sleeveless and has long leggings. This dress is highly contrasty, being only solid black and white. This ties in with the conceptual nature of the dress.

The fact that "one minute we're alive, the next we're dead" has been a hot metaphysical topic sense the dawn of philosophical thought. Some has come up with idea that we don't really 'stop' when we're dead, while other are content with the idea of becoming compost material once we are.

This dress explores a more simplistic view on the subject - the fact that we are here and then gone. It's very black and white (see what we did there): Here - Gone. And yet, it's very elegant in it's simplicity. This is why we decided to go with a Modern typeface and classy silhouette. The material will be paper, and the type will be divided with "I Was Here" on the front, and the rest on the back on a little cap, connected to the collar on the front. The decision of full italic, full regular, or half-and-half is still being played around with.

  1. I really like your idea. It is very emotional and grabs my attention. The concept goes very well with your topic. The simple dress in the 60th style and the black and white colors match very well with your slogan "I was here then I was gone". It is a very black and white topic, there are no gray areas in between and this makes it very clear what you guys saying. Very well thought out. (Sarah Jones)

  2. Your dress sketches appear to support "I was here then I was gone" but more so they add commentary through the sterility and emotionlessness of your design. This isn't to say it doesn't have attitude or emotion, it seems to simply exist and disappear, in itself it's important, but overall, it simply isn't... or is it?!

I think it causes more consideration of life than the message it says. This is crucial to those of us who recognize that life is fragile and fleeting. There were a million ways to present this, and you chose black, white, quick and clean.

I look forward to your finished product.
